Dadaism:
Dada was a movement that responded to the horrors of war and modern society. They saw World War One as being so insane that its existence called into question the validity of the society that produced it.
Dada proclaimed itself as anti-war and anti-art, and was anarchic
The nonsense name and artwork within the movement were meant to bring to light how nonsensical war could be and how insane it was to carry on with normal life with such atrocities occurring.
Marcel Duchamp:(1887-1968)
Duchamp challenged conventional art and tradition of his time.
-He was asociated with the Dadaist and Surrealist movement.
-Wanted to create cerebral Art, as apposed to only visual art. (He accused others of creating 'retinal' art, which is art that is only visual.
-He is known for creating 'readymade' art, which was one of the most minimalist ideas of the time.

Hugo Ball: (1886-1917)
Ball was a writer and performance artist born in Germany in 1886.
-Was the leader of the Dada movement in Zurich.
-Is credited the naming of the Dadaist movement by opening a dictionary and picking out a random word.
-Wrote the Dadaist manifestation in 1916, condemning society and philosophies that claimed to hold an absolute truth.
-Wrote the Dada poem 'Karawane'.
'Karawane'- A poem that is composed of nonsense words and is thought to be the embodiment of the Dada ideal
Cabaret Voltaire = A nightclub founded by Hugo Ball in 1916
-Was meant to be a gathering place for artists.
-Was the central meeting place for the Dada movement in Zurich.
-Featured music, poetry and performances by Dada artists.
-The building was only used for one year

Elsa Von Freytag Loringhoven: (1874-1927)
Also known as Baroness Elsa Von Freytag Loringhoven, was a German born Avante-Garde, Dada artist and Poet who worked for several years in Greenwich Village, New York.
She supported herself by working in a cigarette factory while working as a model for numerous people, such as Louis Bouche, George Biddle and Man Ray.
-Was considered the first American Dada
-Was a pioneer in sound poetry.
