Generating Fine Art Ideas

Developing the James Bond design

17/05/16

For this design, I wanted to stick with a colour theme so that everything worked together. The colour theme I had chosen was red, white and black. I wanted to use the red because that way I could incorporate the classic pillbox colour that we associate to postboxes, and by using that colour, I could also link in the James bond theme even more, since the logo of the film that Pleasance was in was red on the movie posters and because I could use the James bond opening where blood covers the gun barrel.

I was thinking about putting the 007 logo somewhere into my design, however I felt that it would then steer the design more towards Sean Connery, who played James Bond at the time, and would take away from what I was really trying to show in my design.

I also thought about imitating the style of the movie poster, but I was much more set on this idea.

To start the design, I first took an image of Donald Pleasence's character. I wanted to use an image that people would most easily recognise him, and so chose to use one where he was holding the cat.

Once I had chosen the image, I then started editing it in photoshop ready for when I was going to draw it, since I wanted to create a stencil of the image. To do this, I decreased the saturation of the image completely and adjusted the brightness and contrast so that the shadows and highlights where very obvious, but not so much that the detail of the image was taken away.

After I had done this, I began sketching it out. however, rather than doing the stencil idea as I had planned, I began sketching the image out as closely as I could so that it went along the lines of realism much more than stencil.

The image I had drawn was very out of proportion and time consuming, and so I moved away from that and started looking into using the digital image that I had edited.
Lastly, I wanted to put the logo from the film into my design
