Metamorphosis
Research into artists
08/09/15
After looking at the artists from the Metamorphosis: Titain 2012 installation, I have begun to look into artists myself that I am interested in, and that also link to my own interests and theme for my project.
Since one of my interests is floristry, I am hoping to somehow incorporate it into this project, since this also links to the project its self, as plants are ever changing and fit into metamorphosis.
My main idea is to show the change of emotions that could be interpreted from the three paintings by Titain, weather it be through colour, texture, or communication, using synesthesia. By doing this, I am hoping to reflect the emotions using this techique into the person who would be looking at, or in the case of texture, touching the sculpture.
Synesthesia: The production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by simulation of another sense or part of the body
Sam Taylor-Johnson:
Winner of the Turner Prize in 1998, Sam Taylor-Johnson is a photographer, film maker and visual artist. From her wide range of works, I am most interested in a particular piece, that showed through film the natural decay of fruits.
I like this piece because it shows the change of something natural over time, which links to my idea of metamorphosis through the use of natural materials.

Anya Gallaccio:
Anya Gallaccio is a British installation artist who is mostly known for her use of organic matter. Her pieces are often similar to Sam Taylor-Johnson's, however her core aspect of art is change and transformation, while Taylor-Johnson only did the singular piece.
Since Gallaccio's work only exists briefly, it makes it difficult to document, and once the installation is over, she makes careful work of discarding all installation materials once it has closed, and also doesn't allow photography within her installations. Her reason for doing this is so that it exists only in the minds of those who witnessed it, and therefore makes it very anti-monumental.
Franz West: 1947 - 2012
Franz West was an Australian artist. He made his work so that it was vigorous and imposing, yet light hearted and free.
Some of his first artwork was called 'Adaptives', which became complete as artwork when the viewer held or wore the objects.
The piece, Parrahesia, in particular catches my eye because of the bright colours and unusual shape. For me it is a good inspirational piece and foundation to begin to build an idea for texture and colour association into my sculpture work.

Juliana Cerqueire Leite:
Juliana Cerqueire Leite is a Brazilian sculptor who is based in New York. Her work is driven by an investigation into physicality, and how we interact with the physical world. Many of her works are castings of the physical process, and usually show her movements and interaction with the material she used.
Her piece 'Up' was created by suspending a box full of clay over herself, in which she used her hands to dig upwards. Similarly, her piece 'Down' was created by digging herself down into a box full of clay.
I like her work because of the ususual shapes she produces using her hands rather than tools, and because she doesn't aim for perfect shapes, only to show her interaction with the material. It is an inspiration for me, as I could experiment in a similar fashion, only showing what a material like plaster does when still wet and shaping itself.

Lynda Benglis:
Benglis is an Americal visual artist and sculpture who is mostly known for her poured latex sculptures and wax paintings. She is deeply concerned with the physicality of form and how it effects the viewer.
Her work uses a wide variety of bold colours and unusual shape, which is what I like the most about it. I also like the way in which she created the pieces, which I will definitely be experimenting with myself.
Will Kendrick:
Kendrick works using every day objects and bright colours. His work aims to show how the eclectic appearence reflects the wide spectrum of human endeavour of our hyper-saturated, globally connected experience.
His work also aims to show the blurring of lines between how we produce and archive things.
To produce his highly coloured works, Kendrick uses pigmented resin, which, when dried, keeps its shape.
I like the brightness of his artwork, as well as the texture, and am aiming to show the emotions felt throughout the three paintings by Titain through colour association and texture, to further incorporate the theme of metamorphosis, I want to document the change in shape of the material as it dries, as well as also incorporating the change and documentation of natural materials.

Bill Viola:
Bill Viola is quickly becoming one of the words leading artists. and had been extremely important for establishing video as a vital form of contemporary art. For 40 years, he has been creating videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, and flat panel and video pieces.
From looking at Bill Viola's work, I am thinking about making an installation in which I project my documentations into a small space for people to watch.
