Metamorphosis
Plaster application and sculpture creation
16/12/15
This sculpture I made using basic framework, which I had reconstructed in chicken wire from an earlier machete I made using clay.
Due to the shape of my object, it was best to construct it in two different sections and eventually bring them together, however, once I had covered up the wire using plaster and scrim, I realised that it wouldn't look the same, regardless of it being attached, and would also need additional support to hold it up.
The sculpture it's self is rather leggy weight, however, I still feel that the extra support is necessary.
To create the covering, I took a mixture of plaster and blue powder paint and applied it to a loosely threaded material, made sure it was covered and then lay it across the chicken wire to dry. Once it had dried, I began experimenting with colour by mixing paint and water to create a consistency thicker than water, but thin enough to pour.
While I did it I paid close attention to which colours I thought should go where, while adding different colours if I thought there was a lack of variation.
The overall process I am happy with, and even more so with the result of the first part of the sculpture I have made. It has given me inspiration to incorporate colour association into my work and also to look at how different colours relate to the emotions felt throughout the three paintings created by Titian. It also allows me to incorporate my earlier idea of communicating through means that are almost hidden to people.
My work takes inspiration from Franz West's more colourful pieces, as I liked the idea of adding contrasting colours of paint and pouring them on rather than painting them on.
