Box Designs

13/10/15

Since this unit is about creating a product, a big part of it was creating the packaging and the packaging design that the product would go into. This meant looking at numerous box templates, as well as coming up with our own. I started off by looking at simple box nets, and slowly began thinking about the one I would actually want to use, and one that would suit my product.

This design was one I looked at from tetley tea. However, I thought about making a box design that was ore complicated and yet more eye-catching than just a simple box. I them moved on to thinking about what you would relate to tea, and how I could put it into my packaging design.

I thought about creating a box that was like a kettle, which would hold the teabags, however, because of it's shape, I would of had to enlarge the design, which would result in it being too big, since the top was smaller than the bottom of the design.

I also thought about using a material instead of just card, and pved on to thinking about creating a form of packaging that could also be used as decoration, and as well as that, could be seen as a limited edition version of what I was trying to sell. I moved on to trying to create something like a tea cosy, but would instead hold the teabags. However, this process would have taken painstakingly long, also considering that I didn't have the skills to sew together the different pieces of the template I had created. I would have also had to create numerous different designs using the same technique, as well as include some small cards with the information I needed on them.

After that, I looked back at existing packaging, and started to come up with design ideas, as well as putting them into place and seeing how everything looked  on the actual box design. However, I wasn't satisfied with having a simple box, and so went back to looking at usual shaped packaging. I wanted something sleek that matched the curves within the logo I had created.

Once I had found the packaging I liked, I then went about seeing how everything would fit into it.

I didn't ant y packaging to be plain, since plain packaging doesn't catch peoples eyes, and so I went about adding colour to it.

I started experimenting with putting patterns within my design, however, I thought it would be too overpowering to have too much colour within the pattern, and would be too much to have the entire box covered with the pattern. I began experimenting with the opacity and placement of the pattern and the colour.

I was happier with this design, however, I still thought that it was a little plain, even though it had more to it than before. so I began experimenting with the colours and opacity within the pattern again, and this time, thought about trying to show through the colours used the flavour of the tea the packaging was for.

I was now happy with the design I had come up with, however, I wasn't as happy with the smaller details, and so began to experiment with those.

I feel like this design flows more and also displays my product in the best way, through use of word placement and the colours used. I still have more thing to include onto the box before it is finished, as well as make two more designs for the actual unit before it can be completely finished.
