Algenate Casting

15/10/15

Algenate, or dental algenate is one of the safest casting materials and one of the easiest methods for casting. It is used for dental castings as well and is also used when people want their babies hands casted.

The method is simple, as you need the specified amount of water to algenate powder it gives on the back of the packet. Once you have added them in, you have to wisk out all of the lumps to ensure that you get the best results when done. When it begins to set, it can change colour.
To cast, you put in the object you want to cast into the mixture and wait for a few minutes. No heat id given off so it is entierly safe to leave it in.
When the algenate has set, it goes to an almost gel like consistancy. You don't need to leave in the object you are casting after this, and it is okay to take it out.

To get the actual cast, you need to pour in plaster into the space made by the object.
Once the plaster has set, you can easily peel away the algenate mould.

Algenate is used because you are able to get the finest detail by using it, and so is ideal for castting things such as hands.
