Mock FMP

Mock FMP

Research and ideas

09/09/15

For the Mock FMP, we're given two different starting points that we could interpret the way we wanted whilst taking the research we did last year for our specialised fields. since I am still undecided on my field but am interested in both illustration and fashion, I want to focus on these two subjects.

Chindoku and W. Heath Robinson are the two different starting points.

Chindoku is the over designing every day objects and making unnecessary objects that could serve a purpose but have too many design flaws for it to work. Some designs that fall into this category somehow find their way into everyday life.

This is some chopsticks with a fan attached so that while you eat, the noodles are cooled.

This is butter in a prig stick like container

this is a hard hat that has a suction cup attached to the back of it which would allow you to fall asleep on a train and keep your head from moving around.

W. Heath Robinson is an illustrator that over complicates normal objects.

For my idea, i am taking inspiration from something created by a product designer, Leanie Van Der Vyver, which she created for her graduation product. I am mainly taking the concept she used but morphing into something else along the same lines.

For her graduation project, Leanie Van Der Vyver created a pair of shoes, dubbed scary beautiful, that were a metaphor of the way women are pushed over the edge in terms of fashion and was a statement against the over sexualisation of women in terms of fashion. Her piece was meant to be controversial but got more attention because of it's bizarre appearance instead.

My idea almost follows on from her research and reaches into 'Body Shaming', which today is becoming a huge problem, as well as the standard of beauty.

In terms of the fashion side of my idea, I will be looking into:

-The impracticalities of it
-Gender defined and Unisex
-Ideals and Restrictions
-Sexualisation
-Styles and Stereotypes
-Modification
-The Standards of todays beauty

In extension to the sexualisation, I will be extending my research into feminism, sexism and 'Slut Shaming', which circles back to or joins into my idea of Body Shaming

Body Shaming is the act of judging or shaming a person for their body type. It happens to all body types, but to 'Fat' people in particular.

Within fashion, Body Shaming exists within the use of thin models. Certain companies released campaigns for plus sized models and what is deemed as the perfect body, That being said, however, both adverts still use models that were anything but plus sized

This lingerie advert promotes the idea that being Skinny is healthy, a not so discrete advert that openly advocates Body Shaming

This 'Victoria's Secret' Ad was globally critisized and a petition was launched to get the company to apologize for what they were insinuating and promoting, this is, once again a not so discrete example of Body Shaming within the fashion industry
In response to the Victoria's Secret ad, this image was taken and is a recreation, showing that it isn't okay to body shame and that every body is a perfect body.

Agnes Hedengard is a Swedish model that was recently shunned from her industry because of how much she weighed, and was dubbed 'too fat'

Body shaming through clothes:

When it comes to clothes, Body Shaming exists within the difference in type of clothes produced for smaller and bigger people.

The standards of beauty:

The standard of beauty has changed drastically over the last couple of decades, and the ideal aesthetic results in a lot of people getting plastic surgery to achieve it.
It is because of this 'Ideal Beauty and Body Type' that forced Body Shaming to grow and become a predominant issue, especially ove rthe last couple of years

Marylin Monroe, once the most iconic model and once considered to have had the ideal body.

Cara Delevingne, a Victoria's Secret model, has spoke out about 'Fat Shaming' after she was told to loose weight because she was bloated.
Kylie Jenner, at the age of 17 has already spent, at an estimate, around £2 million on plastic surgery to achieve the desired look of standardized beauty. Within the last year, her appearance has drastically changed.

Kim Kardashian is apparently a notorious Photoshop fiend and uses in throughout her Photo shoots and even on her own personal media sites.
Photoshopping in media: Fashion Photography

Throughout media, photoshop is an extremely popular used tool. When used in fashion photography, it's used to change photos taken to how they are desired. filters are added, body shapes are changed, and so are faces. And while some people are okay with it, others have spoken out against it.

Photoshop is used to blur out imperfections

Photoshop is used to change how a person looks and make them look younger

Photoshopping in media has warped the minds of many people alike into thinking what 'Perfect; is. At the same time, those who are against photoshoping their photo's yet still have it occur are angry because of what it promoted to the masses.
