Final piece

For my final piece I have made a sculpture out of clay that focuses on the shoulders and collar bones. Once it is dry, I will then begin painting it in a similar style to my watercolour painting. I will be combining the style of Vorticism by using angular shapes, and will be using the bright and angry colours used in a lot of Futurist work. I hope to achieve a piece that, while simple, will be at first undeterminablez, however, at a closer glance will look like more than just an oddly shaped block. I want the sculpture to be smooth in texture however,upon touching it, will have the bumps and shape if a humans shoulders and body shape, specifically a males. 

The painting style will not be smooth, but will be neat and the shapes I use will be distinguishable.

Upon contemplation, I decided to remove the small wing like fixtures at the back as I didn't feel that they tied in with the sculpture. What I was aiming for was a simple and smooth realisticky shaped male body. The vorticism would be shown in the colour and shaped used rather than the actual sculpture.

The colours I plan to use will be yellow, orange, red and blue, and will transition from light to dark.

Before putting on the colour, I first painted it white so that the colours would be brighter and also had a base.

After this, I then moved on to adding white for contouring and reflection, it would also help the shapes and sculpture look more shapely. 

I then added an dark brown to bring out the collar bones and any indentations on the sculpture.

The end effect, while messy due to the paint strokes and the way that I applied the paint, using pointillism, however it is also neat because of the clean cut shapes I have used. The colour scheme I interpreted after looking at Umberto Boccioni.

After looking at the sculpture from afar, I feel that the green I had used was a little too white, so it blends in with the yellow and the white. The sculpture also isn't obvious and cannot be easily determined, which is what I was aiming for. Some of the shapes can't be easily determined simply because I used the same colour organisation and they were together, so they blend together.

As part of research, we were asked to make a series of observational sketches of architecture and the landscape around us at college. They were to be quick and had to demonstrate angles and edges so that we wouldbthen be able to tie into our vorticism and futurism. We were asked to pay attention, mainly, to the pipes and vents that came out of the college.

From this I began to sketch. I started off by drawing out Collar bones and Shoulders, which I would then begin to experiment with using Vortecism and Futurism.

After the initial sketching, I then began to experiment using water colour pencils, using the bright and angry shades used within Futurism, and the angular shapes used within Vortecism.

Aspects of the body I wish to improve on

After the life drawing session, it came to my attention that I needed to look into how to draw hands and feet, as perhaps the head, in proportion to the body: Hands and feet in general.

How I will put this research into context

This research will become very helpful when it comes to drawing full body sketches, or even focusing on these specific areas when life drawing. I will print out these images and use them as reference.

Additional research

Collar bones:

As I am interested in Collar Bones and the structure of them, I shall be focusing on them within my Vorticism and Futurism work.
I find them interesting because, depending on a persons structure, the collar bones can be visible or not, and have a different structure between men and women.

Working from life drawings

Using 2D media

Using the life drawings that we have been drawing, we are creating pieces of art work that are of the same style as Vorticism and Futurism. This requires sketching out pieces of work already done and applying media in a fashion similar to that of the two movements.

My first attempt at creating a Vortecist piece using life drawing was of a skull. Because the style I was immitating called for sharp, angular and dynamic lines, I sharpened all edges and created thick lines around it. I used a miture of Black charcoal, orange chalk and white chalk.

This proved rather easy for me because of the angular nature of the skull, so upon completing this, I moved on to creating another piece from previous drawings using the model.

For this piece I used a mixture of ink, pen, glitter and coloured pencils. I separated the body into a series of angular shapes. The green ink was used to show low lights and the yellow was to show highligts. any blue was showing extreme low lights. The glitter was applied onto the green as close to the edge, next to the black pen that I had used to outline, as possible. Once I had completely covered the pieve with ink, I then used a yellow and green pencil so as to show more tone and to add more of a 3D affect to the shapes.

The last piece was created using triangles cut out of yellow, orange and green paper, which were positioned carefully, using a charcoal drawing as reference. The yellow was once again used as highlight, where as the orange was used for low lights, and the green for extreme low lights. Once I had finished sticking down the paper, I ten went around the shape in black charcoal to make the shapes more distinguishable.
