Looking at how compelling sculpture is in an environment
18/05/16
Because of the placement of my exhibition space, it is important that I look at how I can direct people or create space using small objects.
One of the sculptures I made I purposely broke up so that the inside of the sculpture was exposed. While the piece was rather large when together, the pieces blame a lot smaller and a lot less noticeable. While they are a lot less demanding because the lack the height the original sculpture did, they are still capable of commanding attention in a small space when placed with strategy.
for one of the pieces, I looked at taking a small space in a corner, behind the door in the corridor of my building. It cannot be seen when you are coming from behind the door, but when you walk back up the corridor, it is very obvious because of the bright white of the material that I used to make it.
Because it becomes more noticeable, it then draws in the attention of those passing by.
It is an object that can be seen as something that has just been discarded, however, because of the environment it is placed in, that being an art building, and because of the specific placement of the object so that the core was exposed, it becomes a very unusual yet obvious sculpture, without having it being set on a plinth or having a barrier around it.
Because my exhibition space is outside, I then wanted to experiment with placement of small 'marker' sculptures that would almost lead the way to the actual exhibition space.
My exhibition space decides around the back of the building in a rather abandoned 'garden' that is full of old plastic sheeting and wood, which I intent to use within a sculpture. There is a more overgrown space towards the back of the garden, which is where most of my pieces will be placed in.
I have made some smaller sculptures that I am using as a guide to direct people towards the back of the building, placing them in small spaces where the kerbstone for the flowerbeds has been removed. I am using small plinths made from a cast of a cup to stand them on, as it makes them stand out more than without, and I have decided to leave the sculptures white, because after conducting a small experiment, I realised that they grab more attention than using colours, which just blend into the background.
