Experimenting with Dyes

26/05/16

Dyes on paper:

the first thing I did when experimenting with the dyes was apply it to dam paper to see how applying the inks differently would change the pattern created, and how the dampness of the paper also affected the pattern and how the dyes spread across the paper.

I tried applying the dyes diagonally across the paper in the colours of the rainbow. Because of the way the paper curls when it was damp, some of the dyes gathered in some spots, and places where the paper was dry the dyes didn't touch because they followed the direction of the damp paper.

I like how the dyes blended together and also ran across different colours. I also like how the purple, when sinking into the paper left traces if blue around the outlines.

With this pattern, I like how, because I was moving the paper to see how the dyes would run the colours all blended together with areas where the dye didn't blend. I also like how because the paper was dry in some places, the dye didn't touch the area until I started moving the paper.

I like this experiment because even though all the colours blended together you can still see all odd the different colours showing through. I like how even though most of the colours blended together, there are still some places where the dye didn't blend.

With this piece, as I applied the dyes, the paper started to dye, so with each layer of eye that was added, it became a lot more pigmented and less washed out.

Dying objects:

Because I liked the sculpture I made using water filled gloves, I wanted to create more, but experiment with dying the gloves different colours before hanging them.
To do this, I let the gloves sit in different colours of ink and different dyes for a few days.

Some of the inks worked better than others, particularly the pink, and the purple dye worked well as well. The yellow didn't seem to take as well, and the blue seemed to dye very well.

As well as staining gloves, I also decided to stain some corks so that I could then use them as part of a culture I was working on. I had previously tried staining them different colours, however the green, orange and blue inks didn't work as well as the pink, and so I decided to stain them all pink.
