Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis

Developing my idea

06/11/15

Originally, I had planned to create numerous sculptures of the female body and the change throughout each part of the story, for example, how the purity of the characters change or was compromised. The only idea I had at the time was to create a sculpture of Callisto, showing how her purity and chastity had been taken once she had been seduced and impregnated by Jupiter, however, I have moved away from this idea.

After sketching out a few automatic shapes, I thought of using texture to convey emotions felt throughout the story, the textures would change from sharp to soft curves.
After this, I thought of incorporating a hidden message into my work.
Since my idea was highly dependant on texture and actually being touched for my idea to convey. I thought about using the Braille alphabet, which, to those who don't recognize it, would simply be something decorative, but to those who do recognize it, it would be a form of hidden communication.

I was going to use brainwaves and how the looked like with different emotions and use that at the textures for each different emotion.

The Braille Alphabet

Using Texture as a form of emotional conveyance:

Going off of the concept of Braille, I bgean to think about conveying emotion through different textures.
Using clay, I made simple patterns that I though conveyed different emotions. The smoothest of examples was to convey a relaxed or calm feeling, much like waves on water. The second of the examples was agitated, and so was to represtent anger or stress, and the last of the examples was much like the first, but a lot sharper and uneven to the touch. This was to represent confusion, however, without having being told beforehand, those who did touch the pieces may feel that they convey different emotions, therefore keeping alive my idea of hidden communication, where in different people interact with the textures differently and feel different things.
