Image Manipulation

Final Piece Evaluation

22/06/15

For my final piece, I decided to continue with my theme of Anthropomorphism, which ties into animal experimentation in an attempt to make people more aware of with the matter, if not in a slightly over exaggerated manner.

I have taken numerous images of friends and distorted them by adding in some unusual features, that would tie my theme of Anthropomorphism and animal experimentation together, such as creating two cat-human hybrids, and then going on to creating some more 'realistic' images, such as incorporating the features of animals into the images taken, for example, adding in animal eyes and fur, which would later transform my theme into animal-human experimentation and transplants.
The whole idea of my theme was to shock and disgust, but to also promote the matters that I have tried to show with my work.

My final piece included a lot of experimentation in the software that helped me create earlier pieces: Photoshop.
I learnt how to turn a line into a cut and how to make something look swollen and infected using simply the bevel and emboss tools, as well as a few extra things to make it look a little more realistic.

I also have started to learn how to change the effect of a photo by messing around in curves and adjusting the image colours, as well as adding filters and noise in order to create an aged photo.
My final piece includes a lot of experimentation work that I have brought into one piece as well as using resources found off of the internet and my research to create a piece that links together in terms of time, news involving animal testing during said time while putting my own twist on it. it is set in a newspaper format, from which I took a front cover of a newspaper from 1954, which then enabled me to do further experimentation in terms of photo filters, so that the image I was using would fit into the template, and I also used the date of the newspaper to my advantage to include some of my research on Vladimir Demikhov's animal experiment: the Multi-Dog.

Thre origional image before any editing. After this, I changed the levels and curves of the image and added in an elephant tusk, which I took from an image of an elephant and simply erased the rest of the image

This image was flipped and the most part erased until there was nothing left but the tusk. Part of the tusk was then erased and made less bright so that it would seamlessly fade into the skin. The colour and brightness was also changed so that it would then blend into the image better.
Most work to make it fit into the image and theme was done at the top of the tusk. In this area I experimented with the bevel and emboss tools to create a swollen and bruised effect. Once I had done this, I then added a little bit of redness using the paintbrush tool with the opacity down on low to create a look of soreness.

The image used after adding filters and editing, which is set into a modified newspaper. The image itself had to be changed just so tht it would fir in with the newspaper, as it required an aged look. To do this, I changed the brightness and contrast, as well as the saturation, and also added noise and a pixel effect.

Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of my final piece as well as the developmental work that allowed me to reach this point. I felt that the theme itself was a motivation for me, which allowed me to produce better quality work. I am most happy about how well I was able to make my final image fit so seamlessly into the newspaper template, and am also very happy with the collection of development work produced throughout this project, as it has allows me to test new water and learn something that would later be very useful.

In this image I used colour changing to match the colour of the ears I had Photoshoped in to the colour of the hair before adding a filter that aged the image.

This image shows further developmental work, in which I tried to add other parts of an animal into the image. This mean shaping and re-sizing the eye as well as changing the colour of it.

This image is my least favourite, however shows a lor of experimental work. In this image I had added in eyes, a cats nose and rats fur. The eyes were changed from a vibrant green to a yellow in an attempt to make them less bright. The fur was made patchy by erasing away parts with the rubber tool. The nose was also faded into the skin this way.
