Worksop Bus station

Primary research

Curtain walling research

04/11/14

For a new assignment, my art course have been asked to design vinyl manifestation that would be used in the yet to be made Worksop Bus Station as part of the renovation of Worksop, and to also give Bassetlaw, as a district, an identity.

What is vinyl manifestation?

Manifestations are applied to glazing to reduce the risk of people mistakenly walking into either glazed doors or floor to ceiling windows (curtain walling)

Vinyl manifestation is a legal requirement when the structure of a building contains a lot of glass, as the new bus station design does, and so we have been asked to create a design that could be anything to do with Worksop as a place, transport and so on, as long as it has flare.

Examples of Vinyl Manifestation:

This design is unique as it is quite simple, however it is bold and flows continuously throughout the design.

I have chosen these two examples of Vinyl Manifestation in particular due to the colour used within them. These two designs show that, while functional, the manifestations may also be quite expressive and artistic. I feel that these two designs would certainly draw more attention that a plain and colourless design.

Wall art, Graffiti art and Murals

Wall art can be used to make a blank wall look a little more interesting without having anything attached to the wall, in the case of vinyl manifestation, it is rather useful to look at for idea's that are inspirational and are creative, as the manifestation is going to be something worth looking at. As well as being in a 2D form, it can also be in 3D as well as rather decorative.

Examples of Wall Art

This piece draws my attention particularly because of the delicate and elegant look it had, while somewhere underneat is a heavy nail or hook to keep it upright. It is simple and yet bold.

Graffiti art is a movement that can be traced back to New York in the 1970's, and was named after the Spray can vandalism that is common throughout the world however is associated with the New York subway system. It will range from simple words to elaborate paintings. It may also be used to express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles.

Bansky

Banksy is a pseudonymous English graffiti artist, political activist, film director and painter who began as a freehand graffiti artist in 1990-1994, and now often uses a stencilling technique. They have taken the style of Graffiti art to a whole new level, as their work is often very controversial and points out how little freedom everyone seems to have, Their work can be seen globally.

The stencil work within this piece may be useful if colour cannot be used in the designs. It also shows how, even though it is only one colour, the gradients and tone are obvious and yet aren't too overpowering.

Murals are a painting or some form of other work executed directly on a wall, and usually are of huge scale. They usually depict something which has a flowing theme throughout.
A mural can be anything and can contain almost anything.

This mural in particular shares some similarities to some of the coloured Vinyl manifestations shown above.
