Human Form and Portraiture

Material Testing

exploring and observing the effects of clay when creating small models

19/11/14

Before actually beginning the making process of the clay model, a sketch of which is below, I first had to test one of the material I had chosen to work with (clay) so that I was able to see how easy it was to use or how effective.

Shaded = Darkened area's/ Low area's

Clear = Highlights/ Pronounced area's

To start with, I made three small models: An eye, a mouth and a nose.

Once these small models are dry I will then begin to paint them, so as to see the effects of adding paint to them to see how I can make them look more life-like. For the eye I will paint and put a clear coating of nail polish over it so I can get a glassy and reflective sheen.

After I had finished making the small models, I then moved on to evaluation of each separate piece.

I also looked into trying to paint a life-like eye by using observational photo's, as well as trying to add depth.

I also researched images of snakes that were rearing up so as to get a clearer view of their movement for my Medusa mask idea.
