Research: Contour

Contour

Research on artists

9/10/14

After the second life drawing session, I was asked to do further research on 4 artists who worked with contouring within their work:Henry Moore:
Henry Spencer Moore (30 July 1898 - 31 August 1986) was an English sculptor and artist. He was best known for his semi- abstract monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public pieces of art. He is also known for his abstract drawings of the human body, which are mostly of the female figure.

Moore, when drawing typically drew using hatching and cross hatching to create contour lines that make up the picture. His drawings do not contain solid lines, but are composed of small and sketchy marks.

Alberto Giacometti:

Alberto Giacometti (10 October 1901 - 11 January 1966) was a Swiss painter, sculptor, draughtsman and printer. He was most notoriously known for producing human figures which were, at first very small and as thin as a nail, which got bigger and thinner over time. The drawings he produced consisted of messy curves that outlined and contoured the people or figures he drew.
Dame Barbara Hepworth DBE:

Dame Barbara Hepworth DBE (10 January 1903 - 20 May 1975) was a sculpture and an artist. Her work was part of the Modernist movement, particularly her sculpting work. She was one of the most predominant female artists of her time. Hepworth differed from both Moore and Giacometti, as her drawings were done in colour, unlike the previous artists.
Egon Schiele:

Egon Schiele (12 June 1890 - 31 October 1918) was an Austrian painter, whose work was notes for it's intensity and because of the many self-portraits the artist created. His expressive pieces made him part of the Expressionist movement.
His artwork were mainly paintings and line drawings, however he did make a few pieces in which the use of contouring is obvious. His work, aside from the self-portraits, were mainly of women.
